Winner of women's 7K race in Spain offered food processor as prize — and nation's secretary of state for equality gets a little testy

The winner of a women's seven-kilometer race in Spain was offered a food processor as a prize, and the nation's secretary of state for equality took notice.

What are the details?

The Associated Press reported that organizers of the Carrera de la Mujer (translated as "Women’s Race") issued a Twitter statement Monday saying they didn't view the kitchen appliance prize — which a sponsor donated — as sexist.

“We apologize, but we consider this a product with no sexist character and ideal for any athlete who wants to improve their nutritional habits,” the statement said, according to the AP. “We regret if any woman felt offended.”

Organizers promised to “take measures” to avoid similar incidents in the future, the outlet added.

More from the AP:

Serb national Ivana Zagorac won the race in 24 minutes, 7 seconds on Sunday, in an amateur event in which 32,000 women participated. The Madrid race coincided with Spain’s Mother’s Day, and supports domestic violence and cancer survivors. It is held in other cities across Spain.

The food processor controversy went largely unnoticed until Ángela Rodríguez Pam, Spain’s secretary of state for equality, tweeted that the winner had received a food processor and others were given 0% fat products.

“If you win: housewife, and if not, at least you’ll lose weight,” Rodríguez Pam tweeted ironically, according to the outlet.

The AP added that the race previously had T-shirts with the slogan: “Today, the girls win!”

How are folks reacting?

You can probably guess how Twitter users reacted to the news:

  • "At least it wasn't a vacuum cleaner?" one commenter said.
  • "It's not sexist. I have a food processor and a blender," another user wrote. "The only thing that's sexist is thinking that men don't have appliances. That is sexist. The food processor is not sexist."
  • "Not even chatGPT could come up with that ..." another commenter quipped.
  • "That's hilarious!!" another user declared.
  • "What did the activists want them to award the winner of the women’s race, a jock strap?" another commenter wondered.
  • "If a man wins a power tool of some sort he's elated, but if a woman wins a food processor it's SEXIST???" another user exclaimed.
  • "It was a gift from the sponsor; stupidity is amazing," another commenter said.
