Mayors ditch meeting with Trump in latest immigration battle over ‘sanctuary cities’
January 25, 2018
A group of mayors including New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio canceled a meeting with President Donald Trump on Wednesday after an announcement that the Justice Department is cracking down on “sanctuary cities.”
The administration sent letters to 23 cities on Wednesday to ask for greater compliance with federal agents enforcing immigration law.
“President Trump shouldn’t invite us to the White House for a meeting on infrastructure and three hours before issue the equivalent of what are arrest warrants for standing up for what we believe in and, by the way, what America believes in,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.
On today’s show, Doc called out the mayors who boycotted Trump’s remarks and reminded them of how our government is structured. Congress passes laws, and the executive branch enforces them. Trump is only doing his job by enforcing federal law when it comes to immigration.
