President Donald Trump signed legislation Wednesday that greatly expands a program allowing veterans to go to private doctors instead of relying on the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA choice program was first created in 2014 after it was discovered that VA facilities around the country were covering up long wait times.
Thompson praised the president Thursday on "The Morning Blaze with Doc Thompson" for signing the law and addressed what the nation needs to do next to take care of U.S. veterans.
Veterans have died waiting for the VA to provide their medical care. But a 2014 program aiming to give them more options didn’t actually help because veterans were still required to wait for 30 days before going to a private doctor. Thompson discussed the dangers of having to wait for a full month or more before seeing a doctor.
“Thirty days can be a death sentence,” Doc said, adding:
It has been, it was for many veterans. Not to mention, [the VA's] little 30 days is bogus because they lie about the numbers. We’ve caught the VA, when they supposedly fixed it, lying about the numbers where they’ve said, ‘No, no, we got them in within 30 days’ because they have all these little things that reset the clock.
