Why didn't anyone tell Comey he was fired?

FBI director James Comey was abruptly fired on Tuesday, finding out by seeing it on the news while he was addressing FBI employees in Los Angeles. Because he had no idea, Comey momentarily thought someone was playing a joke on him.

The White House and the Department of Justice had reportedly been working on the firing for at least a week. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein wrote letters to President Donald Trump recommending that Comey be terminated as FBI director.

Later Tuesday, Trump sent Comey a letter saying, “while I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.”

Doc Thompson and Kal Elsebai took a look at the letter and were surprised to find that getting fired from being FBI director can sound just like getting fired from a regular job. Trump closed the letter with the classic “I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors.”

“He got the future endeavors line?” Doc asked. “Even at that level?”
