Glenn on DACA deal: 'Trump was left cleaning up Obama's illegal mess

One of today’s biggest hot-button issues is immigration, more specifically, what to do about DACA. Lawmakers in both parties have been at a stalemate, unable to agree on how best to deal with “Dreamers.”

Catch me up on DACA

DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Through DACA, immigrants who were brought to this country before they turned 16, and have lived here continuously since at least June 15, 2007, could apply for a permit which protects them from deportation.

President Obama passed DACA in 2012 through “presidential decree," and it only applied to a specific group of people who had lived in this country illegally for at least 5 years at that time. No one who entered the country illegally after 2012 is eligible to apply. An estimated 800,000 “Dreamers” applied and are currently protected under the program.

"It wasn't a heartless pulling of the plug like it's being portrayed in the media"

Then along came Trump

By the time President Trump inherited this whole hot mess, several states were threatening to sue over DACA because Obama’s original presidential decree, which bypassed Congressional approval, and was both unconstitutional and illegal. In September 2017, President Trump called for the end of DACA in six-months if Congress could not reach an agreement on how to make the program work.

"It wasn't a heartless pulling of the plug like it's being portrayed in the media," explained Glenn on the show today. "The Trump administration stopped receiving DACA applicants last September. If your DACA permit was set to expire before MArch 5, 2018, you were given one month to apply for a renewal which would extend your permit for two more years. More than 20,000 DACA permit holders who were eligible for the renewal did not get their permits extended. "

President Trump continues to made his goals clear with the Obama Administration’s DACA program.
