Top Cali. Dem Compares GOP Tactics to Nazi Propaganda...Right in Front of Nancy Pelosi

(TheBlaze/AP) -- The chairman of the California Democratic Party has compared Republican tactics used during the presidential campaign to the "big lie" strategy most famously employed by Nazi propagandists.

John Burton made the remarks Monday in an interview with San Francisco station KCBS while in Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention sitting, it appears, right next to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Cali.).

Burton claimed that Republicans lie constantly, perhaps as part of a grander plan.

He explained: "Joseph Goebbels' concept was the big lie-- if you tell it enough, people will think it's the truth."

Goebbels was the chief of Nazi propaganda, and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler believed the "big lie" had a greater chance of being believed.

The interviewer then asked whether Pelosi agreed with Burton.

"What I agree with is if you have endless money, you can try to sell any misrepresentation to the American people," she replied, nodding her head.  "And this is really-- undermines our democracy."

Pelosi has warned Americans several times about the dangers of heated "rhetoric," saying it can lead to violence.

Republicans immediately criticized Burton and called for an apology, and Burton wrote in a statement: “To correct press reports of my recent comments about Republican lies, I did not call Republicans Nazis nor would I ever.  In fact, I didn’t even use the word...If Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, or the Republicans are insulted by my describing their campaign tactic as the big lie – I most humbly apologize to them or anyone who might have been offended by that comment.”

The RNC’s Matt Connelly responded:  “Chairman Burton’s comments are outrageous and insulting to all Americans. It’s become clear that with no record to run on and no plan for the future, President Obama and his allies will resort to the lowest attacks possible to divert attention away from the fact that Americans are worse off today than they were four years ago.”
