Would-Be Robber Learns Breaking Out Can Be Harder Than Breaking In – Security Camera Captures His Embarrassing Ordeal

Police say a man attempted to rob a jewelry store in Sandy, Utah, and wound up a sitting duck - stuck between bulletproof glass doors - when their officers arrived.

The suspect, 32-year-old Gene Richins, was spotted on several security cameras walking around outside the jewelry store, then cameras spotted the culprit again when he climbed into the ceiling of an adjacent store.

Richins then crawled through rafters toward the jewelry business then crashed through the tiles into an office in the back of the store, according to Fox 13 Salt Lake. Cameras show the suspect using a screwdriver to break glass cases and steal handfuls of watches and other items.

Security alarms were sounding as the thief tried to walk out the front door, but Richins was taken by surprise when the glass vestibule locked him down. Richins then tried to kick in the widows and use a screwdriver to puncture the glass, but soon realized they - and the doors - were shatter-proof.

Police said by the time they arrived they saw Richins attempting to break the glass with a fire extinguisher. However, he eventually gave up, even taking a moment to light a smoke before police put him in handcuffs.
