Congressman Estimates How Many Members of Congress He Thinks Smoke Marijuana

"I don't think more than..."

Congressman Jared Polis (D-Colo.) said it is likely that several active members of Congress smoke marijuana, estimating how many engage in the behavior at a Thursday news conference for the National Cannabis Industry Association.

"I don't think more than five or 10 I would guess," said the congressman, who is a strong supporter of legalization.

"But, I really wouldn't know because I haven't seen them use it," he added. "I would just be completely guessing."

According to Polis, members of Congress are "actually pretty normal" and, thus, are statistically similar to other people in their age brackets.

"So I don't know what percentage of 60-year-olds use marijuana, but it's probably similar in Congress," he said. "So if it's 5 percent of 60-year-olds, then it's probably 5 percent of congress."
