Ukrainian Synagogue Reportedly Firebombed in Attack Caught on Surveillance Camera
April 20, 2014
The main synagogue in the southern Ukrainian city of Nikolayev was firebombed in a Friday night attack, according to one Jewish-affiliated news outlet.
Shturem.org reported that at 2 a.m. the empty synagogue was firebombed, with two Molotov cocktails being hurled at the door and window.
An individual armed with a fire extinguisher happened to be walking by the synagogue moments later and put the fire out preventing "massive damage," the website reported.
The incident appeared to be captured on surveillance video and shows an individual calmly walk away after the apparent attack.
Last week, fliers were distributed in eastern Ukraine calling on all Jews to register with pro-Russian separatists. Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Sunday he vows to find and punish "the bastards" responsible for circulating the leaflets.
