Pop Legend Prince to Be Honored in New Orleans Jazz Funeral

Prince fans in New Orleans have organized a jazz funeral for the music icon.

The jazz funeral march set for Monday was organized on Facebook and will include mourners clad in purple, marching bands and a release of white doves just as the sun's setting on the historic Treme neighborhood.

Tributes nationwide to mark Prince's death have included national monuments tinged purple and public vigils. His hometown of Minneapolis also is preparing a final send-off.

Twenty-two years after its release, Prince's "Purple Rain" is back in theaters following the musician's death.

AMC Theatres announced Friday that 87 of its U.S. theaters will play Prince's 1984 cult classic film beginning Saturday and running through Thursday.

The film was an unlikely box office hit when it was first released, grossing $68.4 million. Its soundtrack went on to sell more than 25 million copies.

Prince was found dead Thursday at his suburban Minneapolis compound at age 57.

A Minnesota sheriff whose deputies responded to an emergency medical call at Prince's compound says his officers carry a medication that can be given to someone suffering a drug overdose, but did not use it during the call.

Prince was found dead Thursday at his suburban Minneapolis compound at age 57. An autopsy was done Friday but a cause of death hasn't been released, and authorities declined to comment on reports that Prince had been treated for a painkiller overdose less than a week earlier.

Sheriff Jim Olson says his officers have been carrying Narcan for the past two years as a matter of policy. Minnesota lawmakers gave police agencies the right to carry it since they are often first responders.

Authorities say Prince was nonresponsive when they arrived at the scene, didn't respond to CPR and was pronounced dead soon after they arrived.

The local sheriff says the last time Prince was seen alive was the night before emergency crews found him unresponsive at his home in suburban Minneapolis.

Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson says an acquaintance dropped Prince off at his compound around 8 p.m. Wednesday. Olson says Prince was found unresponsive late Thursday morning in an elevator on the first floor of his home, after staff members were unable to get ahold of the 57-year-old musician.

Olson says Prince was "a very private person" and he didn't think it unusual for the singer to be alone at his sprawling compound. The sheriff declined to say who made the initial 911 call, saying that information is private.

But he promised to fully investigate the death, saying: "This is certainly a big event internationally and nationally and I can tell you that we are going to leave no stone unturned on this and make sure the public knows what happened."

Minnesota authorities are declining to discuss whether any prescription drugs were found in Prince's home after his death, or to discuss a report that the musician suffered a drug overdose less than a week before he died.

Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson and a medical examiner's office spokeswoman refused to comment Friday when asked about prescription drugs or a possible overdose. Celebrity website TMZ.com, citing "multiple" unnamed sources, has reported that Prince received treatment for a painkiller overdose while traveling home from concerts in Atlanta last week.

TMZ reported last week that Prince's flight made an emergency landing early April 15 in Moline, Illinois, where he was briefly hospitalized.

Representatives for Prince have not responded to requests from The Associated Press for comment on the reports.

Authorities say there were no signs of trauma on Prince's body when he was found unresponsive at his home, and that suicide isn't suspected in the musician's death.

Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson released the information during a news conference Friday.

The sheriff says the investigation is ongoing into the death of the 57-year-old musician, who was found dead Thursday morning at his home in suburban Minneapolis.

An autopsy was completed earlier Friday, though preliminary findings weren't immediately released.

Prince's former drummer and protégé Sheila E. says the singer was bothered by the same physical issues that many musicians suffer.

Sheila E. talked to The Associated Press on Friday, a day after the 57-year-old musician was found dead at his suburban Minneapolis home.

She says she knew Prince had issues with his hip and knee from his years jumping off risers and speakers on stage in heels. She says he kept doing it because he loved it.

Still, she says Prince "really took care of himself," including eating well. She says she tried to copy what he did to stay fit.

An autopsy was completed Friday, but the medical examiner's office said results wouldn't be announced for days or weeks.

1:45 p.m.

Authorities say they have completed the autopsy on Prince's body, but preliminary findings were not being immediately released.

The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office said it finished its autopsy on Prince at 1 p.m. Friday, roughly four hours after it began. The 57-year-old musician died a day earlier after he was found unresponsive at his Paisley Park compound.

The medical examiner's office says that relevant information about Prince's medical and family history is being collected. The agency says it won't release its findings until all information is in, including results of toxicology tests, which could take weeks.

Prince's body will be released to his family later Friday.

A promoter says Prince was slated to perform a surprise set of shows earlier this week in St. Louis but cancelled last week because of health concerns.

Promoter Steve Litman said Friday that he'd been working for weeks to set up two surprise pop-up shows on April 18 at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis. Litman is executive producer for concerts at the theatre.

Litman says tickets were set to go on sale April 15, but that Prince's representatives told him late on April 14 that Prince needed to back out because of concern he might have to cancel the shows due to illness.

Prince had performed two concerts in Atlanta earlier on April 14 to make up for concerts that he cancelled, citing the flu, a week earlier. Litman says he'd been talking to Prince's representatives most of that day.

Prince hosted a dance party two days later at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota.

An autopsy is underway that could provide answers as to why legendary musician Prince collapsed and died at his home in suburban Minneapolis.

Dr. A. Quinn Strobl of the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office began the autopsy about 9 a.m. CDT. A statement from the medical examiner said relevant information about Prince's medical and social history will also be gathered as part of the death investigation.

Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson planned to hold a news conference Friday afternoon to summarize the ongoing investigation into the 57-year-old musician's death.

Olson's office was among the agencies who responded to calls for help Thursday morning at Prince's compound in Chanhassen. His deputies continue their investigation into Prince's death.

Prince's former percussionist says the music star had a history of hip injuries, and Prince himself talked of having epilepsy as a child.

Sheila E. spoke with ABC's "Good Morning America" on Friday, a day after Price died at his home in suburban Minneapolis.

She says Prince suffered hip injuries while performing and damaged his body when jumping from risers in his high heels during his "Purple Rain" days. Prince was seen in recent years using a cane.

Prince himself revealed in a 2009 interview with Tavis Smiley that he had seizures when he was young and was "born epileptic," though it's unclear if Prince had seizures as an adult.
