Anthony Weiner to begin prison sentence for sexting a minor

Disgraced ex-congressman Anthony Weiner will begin his prison sentence on Monday after he pleaded guilty earlier this year to sexting a minor.

How long will Weiner be in jail?

The former Democratic lawmaker from New York was sentenced to 21 months in prison. According to ABC News, Weiner will serve his time at the Federal Medical Center in Massachusetts.

The New York Post reported that the facility offers “residential treatment for sex offenders.”

What did Weiner do?

Weiner — who previously ignited controversy by sexting adult women under aliases such as “Carlos Danger” — admitted to sending lewd images of himself to a 15-year-old North Carolina girl last year. As part of his plea agreement, Weiner was required to surrender is iPhone and to register as a sex offender.

During his sentencing, Weiner reportedly called the crime his personal “rock bottom.”

Weiner’s string of sexting scandals also resulted in his resignation from Congress and derailed a mayoral campaign in New York City.

How did the case impact the presidential election?

During an FBI probe into Weiner’s discussions with the underage girl, investigators discovered emails on his laptop that caused former FBI Director James Comey to re-open an investigation into then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state. Weiner’s estranged wife, Huma Abedin, was a top aide to Clinton.

Abedin announced her separation from her husband following reports he sent lewd images to a woman while laying in bed next to the couple’s young son. She filed for divorce on the same day he pleaded guilty to the crime.

Clinton has characterized Comey’s action as a key factor in her loss last November to President Donald Trump.
