MSNBC anchor Chuck Todd faced angry online criticism from liberals after he proclaimed that the Mueller testimony had been an optics "disaster" for Democrats.
Todd said that if the goal of the Democrats was to capture the imagination of Americans through dramatic testimony that it was a "complete failure."
"Look, I think on substance the Democrats got what they wanted," said Todd to the MSNBC panel.
"They got him to confirm that he didn't make a charge because of the Justice Department memo. He confirmed that you can still indict him on these charges after he leaves office. And he seemed to confirm the idea that under any other circumstance, he likely would have filed some charges," he explained.
"So they got some substance of what they wanted him, some of that, but he provided such, what do you call it, uncomfortable clarity? As they were using him for clarity he'd somehow fog it up in how he would do certain things," he added.
"Look, on optics, this was a disaster," Todd concluded.
Todd went on to say that if Mueller believed the Congress should act on charges against the president, he didn't give Democrats anything to further that cause.
"On substance, they got what they wanted out of him," Todd added, "but because they were looking for this dramatic moment that would capture the imagination, and I think for those members of the, and remember, House Judiciary Democratic members do believe they should start impeachment."
Todd's assessment was instantly rebuked by many on the left, who registered their anger on social media. The phrase "Chuck Todd" trended in the United States because of much of the rancor.
"You help to feed and enable sh*t like this, @chucktodd. The more you guys let him get away with undermining the rule of law, the more he'll hate you. This isn't a game. It's not a show. We're on the brink. Find your integrity, Chuck," responded Bob Ceska.
"F**k your optics," read a popular response from Tony Posnanski.
