Alleged drunk driver slightly injured after splitting his car into 3 parts, but his pregnant fiancée suffered gruesome death

A 30-year-old man from Staten Island, New York, incurred only minor injuries from a catastrophic car accident, but his pregnant fiancée and unborn child suffered gruesome deaths.

Adem Nikeziq was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and driving while intoxicated.

A spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information told Staten Island Advance that the crash happened at about 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning on Highland Avenue.

Nikeziq lost control of his white 2021 Dodge Challenger, hit a wall, spun out, and then split the vehicle into three pieces when it hit a wooden utility pole.

The force of the crash caused his 23-year-old fiancée, Adriana Sylmetaj, to be ejected from the car. She was pregnant at the time, and the baby was also ejected from her body in the crash. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told WCBS-TV that police processed the scene of the crash for about eight hours.

Nikeziq was treated at Staten Island University Hospital, Prince’s Bay, for his minor injuries.

A baby registry in the names of the couple listed the baby as a girl and due in April.

The attorney for Nikeziq told People magazine that he had to inform his client about the death of his fiancée and unborn child moments before he appeared in court.

"I informed my client that his fiancée and unborn child had died in the accident only moments before appearing in court," said Mark Font. "He was overcome with emotion and grief."

Nikeziq is being held on $400,000 cash bail or $700,000 bond.

There are more than 10,000 fatalities in the U.S. per year from drunken driving, meaning one American dies from drunken driving about every 52 minutes.
