Fired FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe: Impeachment of President Trump should happen 'immediately'

CNN invited him to weigh in as an expert

Former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director Andrew McCabe — who was fired on the eve of his retirement for allegedly lying under oath — told CNN this week that congress should begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump "immediately."

What are the details?

CNN host Chris Cuomo invited McCabe on his show to weigh in on recent comments the president made, where the commander in chief suggested he would hypothetically accept information on a political rival if it came from a foreign source.

McCabe called the president's comments "absolutely wrong," and "yet another example of the president's efforts to try to normalize his own abhorrent behavior."

The former official backed up his claims by pointing to a stern statement issued by the head of the Federal Elections Commission on Thursday, wherein Chair Ellen Weintraub reminded the American public that "it is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a U.S. election."

With that, Cuomo noted that 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton paid Russians for a dossier against her then-opponent candidate Trump, and asked McCabe if he saw the two scenarios as "analogues."

"Not at all, Chris," McCabe responded, saying, "there is no equivalence in those two examples." McCabe argued that the Clinton campaign did nothing illegal because it contracted with American law firms for their opposition research, and he defended the foreign national involved for presenting their findings to the FBI.

McCabe — who recently wrote a book titled, "The Threat: How The FBI Protects America In The Age Of Terror And Trump" — insisted during the interview that he's "not a political person" or "a political operative" before declaring that the Mueller investigation showed ample evidence that impeachment proceedings should begin against the president.

He reiterated, "I think that action should be taken immediately."

Anything else?

The Washington Examiner reported that McCabe was fired from the FBI last year "after the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General determined he misled investigators about the role he had in leaking information to the Wall Street Journal in October 2016 about the investigation into the Clinton Foundation."

As of February of this year, the Examiner further noted, McCabe's attorney confirmed his client was still under investigation by federal prosecutors.
