Homeowner fatally shoots alleged home invader; cops say shooter had valid protection order against suspect

An Oregon homeowner fatally shot an alleged home invader early Tuesday morning — and police said the shooter held a valid protection order against the suspect.

What are the details?

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said the incident occurred around 2 a.m. in the area of Cleveland Street in Shady Cove.

Deputies responded to the call, and medics attempted life-saving measures on the suspect, who was pronounced dead at 2:34 a.m., officials said.

Detectives are investigating the homeowner's claim of self-defense during a home-invasion, officials said, adding that the homeowner held a valid protection order against the suspect.

There have been no arrests, officials said, adding that investigators are receiving cooperation.

Upon completion of the investigation, officials said detectives will forward the case to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for review. Officials added that due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, names will not be released at this time.

How are folks reacting?

Commenters on the sheriff's office Facebook post regarding the incident seem pleased with how the homeowner handled things:

  • "That piece of paper protection order did zero good, but the self-defense mechanism was 100% spot on!" one commenter wrote. "This is what happens when you FAFO."
  • "A story with a happy ending!" another commenter exclaimed.
  • "Good! Save us taxpayers money!" another commenter declared.
  • "I’m pretty sure he wasn’t coming over to borrow a cup of sugar at 2 in the morning," another commenter observed. "We all have the right to protect ourselves when necessary by whatever means necessary."
  • "Ph***ed around and found out," another commenter said. "You’ll be hearing this a lot more because criminals think they’re the only ones armed."
  • "That’s how it should be!" another commenter noted.
  • "Hell yes," another commenter stated. "Let’s go for the people willing to protect themselves!"
  • "Natural consequences," another commenter said.
