14-year-old suspect sexually assaulted, murdered 10-year-old Wisconsin girl: Police

Authorities say a 14-year-old boy is behind the killing of a 10-year-old Wisconsin girl whose body was discovered in a wooded area on Monday.

What's a brief history here?

The young victim, Iliana "Lily" Peters, went missing on Sunday after visiting with her aunt.

Chippewa Falls Police Chief Matthew Kelm said that Lily's bike was found a few blocks away from her aunt's home after she never returned home from the visit.

The next morning, her lifeless body was discovered in a nearby wooded area.

What is happening now?

Chippewa County Prosecutor Wade Newell said that the child died a violent death, NBC News reported on Wednesday.

The suspect is accused of punching Lily in the stomach and knocking her to the ground, where he then hit her with a stick "before strangling her to the point of death before then sexually assaulting her."

He added, "Given the statements the defendant made to law enforcement, that his intention was to rape and kill the victim from the get-go when he left the house with the victim going down the trail, the state believes there is a need to protect the community."

The teen, an unnamed boy, was held on $1 million cash bond on Wednesday in connection with Lily's murder.

The outlet noted that if the boy posts bond, he is not to have any weapons and is required to stay away from all juveniles who are not his sibling.

WPVI-TV reported that the teen has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault, and first-degree sexual assault of a child under age 13 resulting in great bodily harm.

If convicted on the homicide charge, the teen suspect could spend the rest of his life in prison.
