Former-President Jimmy Carter said that he does not believe that President Donald Trump won the 2016 election.

What did he say?

Taking part in a panel on Thursday that was broadcast on C-SPAN, Carter was asked about Russian interference in the 2016 election. This panel was hosted by the former president's own Carter Center.

"There's no doubt that the Russians did interfere in the election," he responded. "And I think the interference, although not yet quantified, if fully investigated would show that Trump did not actually win the election in 2016. he lost the election, and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf."

Historian Jon Meacham followed up by asking Carter if this meant he thought that Trump was "an illegitimate president."

"Based on what I just said, which I can't retract," Carter said with a laugh. He also called on Trump to reprimand Russia for its attempts to interfere.

While after years of investigating Russian interference the FBI and other law enforcement agencies have proven that Russia certainly attempted to interfere in the 2016 election, they did not determine that these attempts actually changed the outcome in any way.

The 94-year-old Carter became the longest-living president in U.S. history in March, beating records previously set by George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford. He's on the second president in history, after Bush, to live to be 94.

In April, the White House said that Trump and Carter talked on the phone "about President Trump's stance on trade with China and numerous other topics."
