5 teenagers charged with felony battery over vicious attack on Parkland high school student caught on video

Florida police said they identified and charged with felony battery five teenagers who allegedly attacked a high school student in Parkland.

Video of the brutal assault went viral on social media.

The video showed a large group of teenagers assaulting a male student until one grabbed him, lifted him into the air, and slammed him to the ground. The victim appeared to be unconscious after the attack and reportedly suffered from a skull fracture.

Police said that he had suffered non-life-threatening injuries at the time and was treated at a hospital.

Coral Springs Police said officers worked tirelessly to identify the suspects and apprehend them.

Four of the teenagers were students at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, while a fifth was a student at Coral Glades High School.

Coral Springs police released a statement about the incident on Facebook.

"The safety of our community and schools remains our top priority. On a daily basis, we have approximately 50 officers from multiple specialized units who are assigned to patrol areas around schools during dismissal," said the police department.

"In this incident, we did have two patrol officers around North Community Park during dismissal time. This continues to be an ongoing investigation where additional arrests may be forthcoming," they added. "We want to assure the public that such behavior will not be tolerated in the City of Coral Springs."

They said they are looking for a sixth suspect who might be involved.

One of the students who witnessed the attack told WPLG-TV that they left after thinking to himself, "These people are animals."

Felony battery carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison in the state of Florida.

Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School was the site of the horrific mass shooting attack in 2018 that took the lives of 17 students.
