Politically charged, religious grocery store mailer has people up in arms — but that won't stop this business owner

Good heavens

A southern U.S.-based grocery store chain is under fire after using religion and politics in a mailer to customers.

What are the details?

An interesting blurb appeared at the top of the most recent weekly mailer for Mac's Fresh Market, which has stores in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri.

The message read, "Heaven has a wall, a gate and a strict immigration policy. Hell has open borders. Let that sink in."

According to Newsweek, this isn't a new occurrence: in December, the top of the circular read, "Jesus is the reason for the season," and in January, the circular read, "Persecution and distress cannot be separated from God's love."

The outlet reported that the circular sparked outrage with its most recent remarks, which apparently alluded to the building of a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The majority of the criticism was aired on Facebook, Newsweek reported, and many users called for a boycott of the store.

One user wrote, "You guys think that heaven is only full of white people? Boy, are you in for a surprise. You may wanna try hell first, who knows you may see more people you know that you thought were there."

The commenter added, "You guys have just put the first nail in the coffin that is your company. Welcome to what we call a PR nightmare."

According to Fox News, another added, "Please remove me from any mailers. I will no longer shop in your store. I find your mixture of religion and politics disgusting."

Some social media users even branded the ad "racist."

"We are also checking out your racism and fake religion," one user wrote.

What else?

Reggy McDaniel, the owner of the store, said that he believed he picked a perfect time to run the ad, because it sparked a lot of conversation about the situation at the U.S.'s southern border.

"I thought it was a perfect time because everybody is talking about the border, some people want it, some don't want us to have one," McDaniel told KALB-TV. "The only thing I was shocked about was that it's racist. I have never in my life been accused of being a racist. I'm 70 years old. I haven't evolved into one."

Despite the backlash, some social media users promised to start frequenting the store more.

"Due to your Christian beliefs, I'm going to start shopping more at Mac's! We need more store owners like you," the user wrote.

McDaniel said the hubbub over the ad won't stop him from putting out similar circulars in the future.

"I appreciate them shopping with me, but this is America they have the privilege of shopping where they want to," McDaniel added. "All I can do is tell them my case if they want to describe me in some kind of way that I am someone who is not worthy to shop with, I'd be shocked."
