Democrats finally turn on Rashida Tlaib for promoting Hamas rallying cry that demands the extermination of Israel

Michigan Democrats condemned Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) for promoting a Palestinian rallying cry that promotes the extermination of Israel.

On Friday, Tlaib posted a video demanding that President Joe Biden support a ceasefire in Gaza or risk losing the support of Americans who support the Palestinian agenda.

The video included "from the river to the sea" chants, prompting Tlaib to explain what the phrase allegedly means.

"From the river to the sea is an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate," Tlaib claimed. "My work and advocacy is always centered in justice and dignity for all people no matter faith or ethnicity."

But the inclusion of the slogan — and her attempt to whitewash its meaning — ignited a firestorm of new backlash against Tlaib because of the true meaning of the slogan.

The Anti-Defamation League explains:

This rallying cry has long been used by anti-Israel voices, including supporters of terrorist organizations such as Hamas and the PFLP, which seek Israel’s destruction through violent means. It is fundamentally a call for a Palestinian state extending from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, territory that includes the State of Israel, which would mean the dismantling of the Jewish state. It is an antisemitic charge denying the Jewish right to self-determination, including through the removal of Jews from their ancestral homeland.

Promotion of the slogan was finally a step too far for prominent Michigan Democrats, who publicly rebuked Tlaib.

"This is not how Jews view the phrase 'from the river to the sea.' This is not how Hamas views the phrase 'from the river to the sea,'" explained Michigan Senate President Pro Tempore Jeremy Moss (D).

"Hamas uses it as a rallying cry. And they don’t simply want to displace Jews in Israel. They want Jews dead," he said.

".@RashidaTlaib, I have supported and defended you countless times, even when you have said the indefensible, because I believed you to be a good person whose heart was in the right place. But this is so hurtful to so many. Please retract this cruel and hateful remark," said Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D).

"As the only Jewish member of MI's congressional delegation, I have worked to reach out to Arab & Muslim constituents who I know are feeling fear and anguish right now, & I have tried to reflect that empathy in my approach to this crisis. I ask the same of [Tlaib]," said Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.). "The phrase 'from the river to the sea' is one of division & violence, & it is counterproductive to promoting peace. None of us, especially elected leaders, should amplify language that inflames a tense situation & makes it harder for our communities to find common ground."
