We at TheBlaze Magazine have had a crazy 2014, covering everything from the George Soros-connected scheme to use the government's power to take over billions of dollars of mortgages to the powerful stories of those spending the their lives honoring our veterans to threats against our nation's freedom (from China, Common Core, and EMPs) to the institutions that have always offered answers to our many woes.
Of the literally hundreds of stories we published in the magazine this year, here are our Top 20 from 2014. Subscribe today and get a FREE issue.
20. One Last Mission
March 2014: Washington, D.C., features memorials and tributes to America’s bravest—but many of those heroes will never get to see them. The Honor Flight Network is working to change that.
19. Getting to the Truth — Always
September 2014: South Carolina GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy has been given the job of leading the congressional probe of the 2012 Benghazi attack. He may be the most qualified congressman to ever head such an investigation. But who is he? What does he believe?
18. Boardwalk Babes: The Strange Story of the Incubator
November 2014: In the early 1900s, one man with a vision took a risk to share with the world a way to save preemies. The tale of how his invention came to preserve the lives of millions of infants serves as a lesson for everyone.
17. Serving Those Who Serve
January/February 2014: After years building a successful career as a movie and TV actor, Gary Sinise is using his fame to change the lives of U.S. military warriors.
16. Our Favorite Villain
May 2014: It's clean and powerful, efficient and reliable. So why have we been taught to fear nuclear power?
15. Ted Talk
July/August 2014: The two words that can strike fear in the hearts of most Democrats: Ted Cruz. The first-term Texas senator was relatively unknown to most Americans until last fall when he stood in the Senate and spoke for 21 hours. (Don’t call it a filibuster!)
We didn’t have that much time, but we did have questions for Sen. Cruz. So we the put the loquacious legislator in the Hot Seat and grilled him like a cheese sandwich.
14. Falling Behind
October 2014: Conservatives are fooling themselves into thinking the millennial generation is in tune with the Right. The truth is that we’re losing ground in the cultural battle for young voters’ hearts and minds.
There's still hope, but if we want our music to be heard, we have to play where the crowds are.
13. Man Down
November 2014: Progressives tell us that men are destructive rulers the world, low-intelligence Neanderthals and oppressors of women. Thanks to modern science, men are not even essential for procreation.
In a culture where women are encouraged to be empowered and independent in the workplace and at home, men are left searching for their place in society and boys don’t know where to turn, which can lead to devastating effects.
12. Top 20 Cockamamie Federal Spending Items
March 2014: A report from the office of Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., wrapping up the spending excesses of federal government revealed 100 wasteful projects from 2013 totaling nearly $30 billion. All this waste was happening at the same time that bureaucrats were telling Americans that important federal departments were suffering under sequestration and during the autumn “shut down” when agency heads were forced to decide what was “essential” and “nonessential”—apparently none of these items qualified as “nonessential.”
We pulled out the 20 items that seem the most absurd, asinine or bizarre—even if they weren’t the most expensive.
11. An Imminent Eminent Threat
January/February 2014: A group of wealthy investors, connected politicians and far-left activists have their eyes on taking over billions of dollars of American mortgages by abusing the government's eminent domain power.
10. Get to Work
April 2014: Before he had all those “Dirty Jobs” and famous voiceovers, Mike Rowe sold stuff on QVC. He lives humbly and focuses on the greatness of work. Rowe has one of the most recognizable faces and voices in America. We wanted to know more, so we put him in the Hot Seat.
9. Flipping Texas
June 2014: Progressives have been spending millions of dollars to set up a ground game in the Lone Star State with an eye on flipping it from red to blue. If they win there, small-government conservatives shouldn’t expect to see serious electoral victories for decades to come.
The good news: There’s a movement afoot to turn back the gathering horde.
8. They Can't Both Be President
March 2014: Ted Cruz and Rand Paul sit atop the list of 2016 White House hopefuls for many libertarian and conservative voters.
What would a Cruz-Paul primary battle mean for the election? Will they split constitutionalists? Can either man win the nomination? How will the establishment GOP react to them?
7. Using the Constitution to Save the Constitution
June 2014: The growing federal government continues to threaten American liberty. Now many conservatives are banding together to call for an Article V convention of states to take back the power the feds have stolen.
6. Marriage Makes Us Stronger
July/August 2014: The best hope for our nation can be found in the greatest institution.
5. China Surge?
April 2014: The PRC is holding much of our national debt, buying up American businesses, growing its military and investing in ways to “de-Americanize” the world. Many in the United States fear we’re now playing second fiddle to an expanding Chinese powerhouse.
4. Top 10 Pro-Gun Rights Celebs Who Might Surprise You
September 2014: Most celebrities toe the liberal line on nearly every issue—social, economic or political—and no one is surprised to hear Alec Baldwin or Susan Sarandon or Sean Penn spouting leftist progressive nonsense. But when members of a reliably elite liberal crowd reveal a constitutionalist leaning on an important issue, people on the Right begin to take notice. This is especially true when stars and starlets come out in favor of gun rights—a longtime left-wing bugaboo.
Most Second Amendment advocates know about conservative-leaning celebs whose pro-gun stances might not be that surprising, celebrities such as Ted Nugent, Tom Selleck, Clint Eastwood, R. Lee Ermey, Chuck Norris, Jeff Foxworthy and even Bruce Willis. But these 10 big names, whose politics have been presumed reliably liberal, might surprise you in their support for gun rights, from being licensed gun carriers who at least advocate for their own gun rights to vocal advocates for everyone’s Second Amendment rights.
3. Core Values
May 2014: Witness the progressive education scheme in action.
America’s education system is being fundamentally transformed. Instead of fostering a generation of thinkers, today’s children are being indoctrinated with leftist philosophy while their privacy is being compromised by huge data-mining systems with private interests.
If fully implemented, Common Core will serve as progressives’ greatest weapon against American freedom.
2. Border Battle Nightmare
December 2014: The Untied States’ southern border has become a horror show—for Americans who live there, Border Patrol agents trying to do their jobs and thousands of illegal aliens who have fallen for a lie.
The only winners in this are the Mexican criminal elements smuggling people, drugs and weapons across the border and America’s corrupt politicians with there personal agendas.
1. Slouching Toward a Nuclear Blackout
September 2014: The potential destruction of the United States by an EMP attack is more than a theory. Our most lethal enemies—Iran, North Korea, China and Russia—have the means and quite possibly the desire to knock out our entire power grid. They’ve even conducted practice runs to test our vulnerabilities.
And we can be sure the new caliphate in the Middle East will be happy to play along.
So why isn’t our government doing everything it can to prevent this nightmare?
