Fed up California man bashes in window of getaway car after thieves rob work van; other resident uses gun to thwart robbery

Surveillance video captured the moment a fed up California resident bashed the window of a getaway car after thieves were able to break into his work van.

The incident unfolded on Monday at about 12:30 a.m. in front of the man's home in Sun Valley at Beck Avenue and Saticoy Street.

Security video obtained by KABC-TV shows the man walk outside after the alarm on his van went off. Two robbers broke windows on his van and are running off with his tools when he smashes the window of their getaway car.

Police say they ran off with about $5,000 worth of power tools and a ladder.

In a second incident from the same night, about 10 minutes before the first incident, another man was able to scare off would-be robbers with a gun.

Raymond Rice described what happened outside of his home near Ben Avenue and Elkwood Street.

"I heard the alarm go off, ran outside with my gun," said Rice. "Came out here, the guy was, two people, one person driving, came to the corner and backed up, smashed the side of window and then smashed the side of the car."

He said they were trying to get into his car when he ran out with a gun and they ran off. They were not able to steal anything in that incident.

"I couldn't even get out here as quick as they did it," he added.

Rice went on to say that there have been other burglaries in the area.

"This has happened three times on this block already," he added. "People have to start arming themselves, we're gonna have to take care of ourselves."

No injuries were reported.
