Watch: Here's what we know about the 'Deep State' in America

Shortly after President Donald Trump took office, a series of leaks within the government began to plague his administration, leading to a fresh wave of conspiracy theories about the existence of a “deep state” or a secret entity that underhandedly controls our government and elected officials.

Yesterday, Glenn kicked off this week’s chalkboard series on the Deep State by acquainting listeners with two different types of deep state: the "monolithic" and the "large bureaucratic machine."

The monolithic deep state is the the type you might read about in spy novels or hear about in  conspiracy theories. By definition, monolithic means “constituting or acting as a single, often rigid, uniform whole.” A monolithic deep state is one in which a single entity or organization secretly rules within or over the recognized government.

While there is no known monolithic deep state in the United States, this clandestine scenario does exist in other parts of the world such as Turkey and Egypt. (Click here to learn more on monolithic deep state..)

On today’s show, Glenn continued on the topic with a closer look into the second type of deep state: ‘large bureaucratic machine.’

“The large bureaucratic machine does exist here in America and many times it runs directly contrary to the will of the people,” said Glenn. He later added, “This machine has a mindset that, regardless of who you are, who you vote for, or what you want, the state knows best. They know what’s best for you, better than you know. This mindset exploded and really came about in America during the progressive era.”

In the video clip above, Glenn works his way down an origins-of-deep-state timeline, starting when President Theodore Roosevelt set the stage "for the bureaucratic machine to take off."
