Watch: The incredible moment wheelchair-bound Bob Dole rises for a patriotic salute to George H. W. Bush

Former Republican senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole was helped out of his wheelchair on Tuesday to salute the casket of the late former President George H. W. Bush.

Bush passed away on Friday at the age of 94.

What are the details?

Dole, 95, appeared at the Capitol rotunda on Tuesday to pay his respects to the late president.

Others dignitaries who attended on Tuesday included Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and House Speaker Paul Ryan, along with several Trump staffers.

In a heartfelt moment of patriotism, an emotional Dole — who served alongside the late president during World War II and also ran against him in the 1988 Republican presidential primaries — rose with help from an aide and saluted the former president's American flag-draped casket.

During Dole's salute to Bush, the attending crowd remained silent.

Bush defeated Dole in the 1988 Republican presidential primary. Dole would go on to be the Republican presidential candidate in 1996, but would lose to former President Bill Clinton.

Anything else?

Bush will lie in state until Wednesday morning. The former president's children and family — including former President George W. Bush — attended a Monday ceremony for the late president.

Bush's state funeral will take place on Wednesday at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The former president will then be transported to his presidential library in College Station, Texas, where he will be laid to rest alongside his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush.

The former first lady passed away in April at 92 years old.
